Santiago´s on the move, especially its music scene. New voices appear every year, people trying to perform and find a place in the ears of listeners.

We at Ciu Santiago care about showing you all of these sounds, feeding those who are hungry for something new, as well as collaborating with artists who are working in such good faith, sharing with everyone.

So today, I bring to you my latest fixation, in which, just as our beloved Kendal with Dënver, it was love at first listen.

The story is short and recent—yes, you must remain in suspense. A while back, I was listening to a night program on Radio Horizonte and felt I´d heard the live guest´s sounds before, something in the piano´s base was extremely familiar. Of course! Those piano bases took me back to my recent encounter with CAF, and how could it not, since I was listening to their keyboardist, Marcos Meza (a.k.a. sub-comandante Marcos).

So, that´s how I first learned of Marcos´ solo project, in which he´s already released two albums, what I heard being from his latest work, Fantasías Fonéticas (Phonetic Fantasies), which launched in March 2011 at the SCD room. I was hooked immediately, hallucinated by the arrangements´ elegancy, jazzy nuances and the narration´s rhythm. Marcos was telling a story and I was seeing it.

In an interview with Super 45, he defined his music as an attempt to mix the erudite with what´s popular; this pianist´s work is a treat. Marcos achieves a harmony and his own mark among styles meant to unite, mixing known images —this Chilean´s music truly makes me hallucinate— with ignored tendencies, especially for those not familiar with classical music. It´s a cinematic experience.

And what´s best, is that you can experience it for yourself, completely, legally and freely, as Marcos Meza´s two albums —Piezas para Piano y cuarteto de Cornos (Pieces for a Piano and a Horn Quartet) (2010) and Fantasías Fonéticas (Phonetic Fantasies) (2011)— are available for download on his site.

Excellent Marcos Meza!
